24 hours in energetic Montpellier – France

A road trip is the best way to explore France. If you are in the south of France we recommend you to stop for 24 hours in Montpellier. Half the population in Montpellier is under 35 and that makes it an energetic city. In this city past and present meet each other. Students come here to study and of course enjoy the climate and the beach. It is one of France’s fastest-growing urban centers. Situated in the South of France Montpellier should be on your to-do list when you are in the region. The best way to experience the present and the future of Montpellier is by booking a night at boutique hotel Baudon De Mauny. Click here for a full review of this hip hotel.

The historic city center

If you think that Montpellier is only for hipsters in their twenties you couldn’t be more wrong. Cute squares with multiple bars or a labyrinth of typical streets. Just two of the things that make the historic city center of Montpellier interesting. The best way to discover the city center is by foot. No need to take metros or busses. Everything is close and you will love the typical French architecture. You can also find Europe’s oldest medical university in a magnificent 12th century building. The best way to embrace a new city is by eating and drinking food from the region. Since we only spend a short 24 hours in Montpellier we enjoyed some fish dishes (because Montpellier is close to the sea) and wine. Whenever you find yourself in France wine and cheese are your best options to have a lovely typical dinner.

One of the must see spots in Montpellier is definitely ‘Cathédrale Saint-Pierre’. You actually can’t miss this cathedral because this Gothic church towers above everything. Next to the cathedral you will find ‘Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier’, the oldest botanical garden in France.

Perhaps the most important place in the city is the ‘Place de la Comedie’ where the ‘Opera Comedie’ is located. Place de la Comédie is Montpellier’s central square.

And if all this isn’t enough. Drive just 11 km and you can relax on the beach. This city has everything you need for the perfect city trip or weekendbreak!
