Is paris safe to travel to

The question that is on all of our minds: is it safe to travel to Paris?

It’s been 3 months since the attacks happened in Paris and Saint-Denis. On the evening of 13 November 2015, a series of coordinated attacks happened around the area of Paris. Everyone around the world heard and saw the horror that happened there. Why did they do this to the city of light and love?

In response, a three-month state of emergency was declared across France to help fight terrorism, which involved the banning of public demonstrations, and allowing the police to carry out searches without a warrant and block websites that encouraged acts of terrorism. The hashtag #prayforParis was created and millions of people reacted on social media.

That being said and done we still decided to go to Paris in February 2016. The country was still in this state of emergency and we were curious on how it would reflect our view on this lovely city. It was my third time in the city and I can tell you that it’s still magical and wonderful.

What did change:

  • When you enter the country by car there are some soldiers who are controlling the border
  • When you take the Thalys you have to get your bags checked when you leave Paris/France
  • More security in shopping malls and shops
  • Visible police and army in the street

I didn’t feel unsafe in any way. I guess it’s the same situation as in Belgium so there weren’t any big shocks for me. My family and friends did need an update every day, but asides that Paris is perfectly safe to travel to. The joie de vivre is the same, even though many things will forever be different. The city has been scared but is not broken.

I was thinking of visiting Paris this spring, but my husband feels too many things have happened in recent years… great to read that you didn’t feel unsafe and had a good time

Hi Stephenie, I try not to let terrorism put me off visiting places, but with the attacks in Brussels and the news that the same group may have been planning another assault on Paris, it does make me think. I think Anemary may be referring to how empty the streets look in the pics. Paris is a great city and if we keep visiting it’s a good way to show our support.

Thank you Amanda for you reaction. I live in Belgium so I know how the media makes people scared. I will keep traveling as long as I can. It’s the best way to show others that even bad news can reunite people.
