Famous for its black gate and the typical German houses. But did you also knew that Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany? Tucked away in the region of Rhineland-Palatinate lies this beautiful little city. The ideal spot for a weekend trip when you are in Belgium or Luxembourg. For our trip to Trier we stayed at the IAT plaza hotel, located just 2 km away from the city centre. The hotel restaurant Harry’s tower was completely reopened in January 2016. They also offer free parking. Which can come in handy when you want to avoid high parking rates in the centre. The motto of the hotel goes as followed: a hotel is not just a hotel. It is distinguished by the staff, the atmosphere and so much more.

For a four star hotel the spacious rooms are well equipped and they even have a proper blowdryer. There aren’t that many restaurants in the neighborhood so if you’re not there with a car make sure to check your options first or you can just enjoy a relaxed evening in the restaurant of the hotel.

In the centre of Trier there are many options during the day. It feels like an open-air museum. First lets start with the most famous culture building of Trier. The Porta Nigra, which means Black gate in Latin. It is a large city gate from the Roman empire. In Roman times, the Porta Nigra was part of a system of four city gates. The gate today is closed for cars, but stands right next to one of the main streets of Trier. The Porta Nigra, including the upper floors, is open to visitors. In summer, guided tours are also offered by an actor dressed up in full armor.  It is remarkable how well this building is preserved after all this time.

The second and maybe the largest building in Trier is the cathedral. It is the oldest cathedral in Germany. In 1986 it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. So I can add it to my article about all the Unesco sites I’ve visited. Walking around such an impressive church makes you feel so small. How did they build something like this so long ago?
