It’s so close to home (for Belgium) and it still feels like a proper vacation. We used to go to Luxembourg just for groceries, but we have never been in Luxembourg city before. So is it really worth your time?

Must do: Vianden (castle), capital of Luxembourg

The first stop was in Vianden where we decided to stay for one night. Vianden is the home of a fairytale castle. It is one of Luxembourg’s hot spots for tourism, not only because of the castle, but also for the walking trails. We stayed in hotel Belle-Vue with an indoor pool and sauna. What does a girl needs more? Well the service of the staff was amazing and they even gave me a little present. I do love to get presents!

The best way to get a good view over the city is by taking the chairlift. A retour ticket will cost you around five euros. During the summer months the chairlift operates from the banks of the river in the lower part of town. It takes you high above and you’ll have some magnificent views over the glorious landscape. You can also visit the castle of Vianden. Much of the original castle construction is still preserved today and the chapel from 12^th century is still standing as well. We enjoyed the views the most.

Would we go back to Vianden? Maybe, but in one day you’ve seen everything so we wouldn’t book a room there anymore. After Vianden we went to Echternach for a couple of hours. Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg. This city is extremely touristic and is really close to Germany. The language there is a mix between French and German. It sounds so funny.

Now let’s talk about the real deal. The hotel we had booked (DoubleTree) is located 10 minutes from Luxembourg City. In front of the hotel you can take a bus that takes you directly into the center. The best thing about this hotel was the welcome gift. They have chocolate chip cookies! Everything is perfect for me as long as you give me cookies.

We didn’t look anything up for this trip, so we didn’t know what to expect. I only knew that Luxembourg is really expensive. We just walked around the city and did everything that crossed our path. We really like to just do things in the moment. One of the interesting things to do is the partially underground city called the Bock Casemates. It’s pretty cool because the walls and rocky cliffs form a natural fortitude around the city.

Did you know the old quarters and fortifications of the city of Luxembourg are UNESCO World Heritage Listed?

Another fact about Luxembourg that I didn’t knew before this trip is that there live a lot of Portuguese people in the city. We accidentally ended up at the annual Portuguese party. That’s the fun part about not planning anything. The downside of not planning this trip is that we can’t share some amazing touristic spots. We just wandered around the city for hours on end.  I guess I’ve seen a lot but just can’t put a name to the picture.
