It is becoming a tradition. Every year we make a review of our best experiences that year regarding hotels, restaurants, and destinations. 2016 has brought us a lot of travel memories with laughter and joy but also a lot of stress. Halfway through the year, we decided to go all-in on traveling. Read the beginning of our story here. In August, we set off on our adventure to see all the beauty the world has to offer. That makes choosing the best experiences of this year even harder than all the years before. Harder doesn’t mean impossible. We have come up with what are for us the most exclusive travel memories of 2016. Here is our 2016 reviewed in 5 questions.
#1 Most surprising destination
The Hague surprised us the most this year. It has everything from beautiful hotels such as the luxurious suites of ‘t Gouden Hooft as a beach with its majestic Kurhaus. Besides the beautiful hotels, the atmosphere in The Hague is vibrant. We had an amazing fashion tour there and went inside the ‘ridderzaal’. It is easy to see that The Hague has it all. A marvelous history, the seaside, a fashion district, and super friendly people. If you are planning on visiting The Netherlands, The Hague should be on your list!
#2 Most exclusive destination
We have been to some amazing destination over the year. Italy stole our heart but also Prague and London were eye-openers. But the most exclusive destination of this year has to be Aruba. Aruba is a small island in the Caribbean of the coast of Venezuela. When writing this article, we are still there enjoying some sun on Aruba. The average weather conditions are around 30 degrees Celsius or 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Eagle beach is one of the most photographed beaches in the world and people are here so relaxed. It is an exclusive destination for us since this year we have spent a lot of our time in Europe. It is also exclusive since it is not that well known in Europe. So, if you are searching for a destination off the beaten track? Aruba is your island!
#3 Best hotel experience
We have been living in hotels for 5 months of the year. Having said that, you can easily say that our judgment has been compromised. Our standards are high and we spot even the smallest detail. Some hotels even hire us to do just that. Our answer to this question has been without discussion the Draycott hotel in London. We enjoyed our night in this well-designed English hotel. Hotel Draycott will transport you back to the good old days of English aristocrats. In every detail, you find English elegance. Build in 1890 this hotel still holds its classic character. Besides style, they focus even more on service. Some of the staff even works here longer than 20 years. And we have to say that the service here is impeccable. We are looking forward to the hotels that we will be visiting/reviewing in 2017.
#4 Unique Tourist Exclusive find of 2016
Whenever we are in a new city it is our mission to find unique concepts. We have to say that that isn’t always easy. When we came across Settembrini in Rome we were utterly surprised. The name Settembrini holds 3 totally different concepts regarding lunch and dinner. It is out of the tourist area and that is why all the locals come here. When there are locals the food must be good and we can attest to that. The food in all of the 3 hotspots of Settembrini is delicious. They are all different so whatever you are looking for can be found in walking distance from each other. Don’t miss out on this unique Tourist Exclusive experience when you find yourself in Rome.
#5 Best meal of 2016
For this last question, Peter and I had a bit of a disagreement. Peter was sure about his choice but I couldn’t decide between the many options we had this year. I think we eat out more in one month than other people do in a year. So the options were limitless. I kept going between restaurant Alice in Milan, restaurant Pur’ in Paris, restaurant Lotus in London and restaurant Jerome Nutile in Nîmes. Peter absolutely loved our dinner at Jerome Nutile. I have to say that I had the best dessert of my life there. But the coconut curry I had in restaurant Lotus in London was also fabulous. But overall I have to agree with my partner. The best meal of 2016 definitely was in restaurant Jerome Nutile. The wine pairing was sublime; the cheese was outstanding and the creations of the chef were indescribable. This restaurant is worth the detour/trip and deserves 2 Michelin stars if it was our choice. We had so many marvelous hotels and restaurant this year. We can only hope that 2017 will
